Lissewege, the white village is at 12 km from the centre of Bruges. It is know for its cosy restaurants and is an ideal place for walking and cycling. The village is dominated by the monumentel church of Our Lady of the Visitation. Unique is the barn of the abbey of Ter Doest. This monumental barn was built around 1275 and is undoubtedly one of the most important Gothic buildings in the Low Countries. Its style is pure Gothic, as illustrated by the tall windows. The barn is 56 meters long, 21 meters wide and 17,50 meters high. The oak beams have carried the impressieve and unique truss for over 700 years. The barn was restored in 2003. Lissewege was situated on the busy pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
